In the early 1900's nursing homes did not exist. Federal assistance
programs to help pay for the care of elderly or disabled did not come
into existence until the 1950's. Most states sent impoverished citizens to
"poor farms" or "almshouses".
Mrs. Sarah Roberts French could see that there was a real need
for the elderly without families to care for them. Her vision to help others
inspired a dream.
The Sarah Roberts French Home was chartered in 1950. The first resident moved into the boarding home in 1953, bringing Mrs. French's dream to life.
In 1974, The Sarah Roberts French Home was licensed; giving it the distinction of being the oldest continuously licensed nursing facility in Bexar County. For sixty years our founder's heart-felt dream has given many a place to call “home”.
